D7 and D7P VDI’s now have Project Libre, LibreOffice. Some D7/D7P users have been prompted to open files that were auto-saved by Word/Excel. Note that Auto-saved files are not in the same location that the original file was, your continued changes there don’t get on the T:\ drive and are not backed up!
Please LOG OFF of the VDI when you will be gone more than 1 hour or if you are moving to another “pool” like D7 to D7-. Logging into a different pool after lunch ties up extra chairs.
VDI prompts for Password after pool selection (D7 is a pool)
It’s quite frustrating when the VMWare Horizon Client prompts repeatedly for your password. You may resolve this by logging into https://VDI.primaris.org with the Chrome browser. Do NOT save your PW in the browser! Click the Desktop on the line of your pool. When prompted to Open-XDG, do so.
You can change PCoIP to blast to run the VDI without VMWare Horizon client, but not on multiple monitors.
Printing
The intermittent “my printer does not appear” problem has been frustrating. We find that in most cases it can be resolved quickly by disconnect and exiting the VDI, (DO NOT CLOSE YOUR APPS). First, note which pool (D7, D7P or N8) you are in. If you don’t remember the Pool you’re in, minimize the VDI and the pool is on the task bar. While the VDI is down, check to see if your printer is enabled on the local machine. If you can’t print local, you will not print from the VDI.
Then log right back into that same pool and all your apps are there where they were, docs still open, draft emails with the cursor blinking where it was. In about 30 seconds you can go to Start…Printers and see your printer.

VDI goes to Black Screen
There are cases where the VDI goes to a Black Screen. Typically you can still move the mouse to the top and the hidden VMWare menu will come down to you. Disconnect by clicking and exiting the VDI and immediately reconnect to the same Pool at first, and if it’s still a problem, try another pool.

Can’t get a network hooked
It’s possible when you “logged in” to the local Linux machine, you used the Guest account. You can’t use the Guest account with wireless. Menu -> Log Out and use the arrow keys to log into another account.

Excel Opens Tiny
In some cases Excel opens in a tiny window with no menu and no view of the file. Move the cursor of the mouse over the corner of the window and expand the window.
Outlook not updating
Close Outlook and any of it’s windows. You used to have to close Lync, but that’s not necessary on D7 or D7P anymore, Del_My_OST kills Lync for you. On the Desktop, in the Special Folder, run (double-click) Del_My_OST. That program deletes the OST file and opens Outlook and Lync (Skype). The “Outlook is using an old copy…” error should be fixed. Lync takes a while to start with “Preparing…”. Cancel it and start Lync again or ignore, it comes on eventually.

Lync won’t share screen
If you are in the VDI and you cannot share your screen, it’s likely you are using the wrong pool. N8 is for people who don’t share their screen. Try using D7 or D7P.

Webinar falls asleep and other mtg performance problems
The local laptop is the optimal place to view a webinar because the content has fewer trips to make over the network. Copy that 9 digit meeting number, minimize the VDI, and go to https://gotomeeting.com -> join a meeting and paste the meeting number in. Better still, join the meeting on a personal device like a tablet, as long as you are not discussing PHI or PII in the meeting. It won’t matter if the VDI sleeps through your meeting.

Make the Fonts bigger in the VDI
Use Display on the local Linux machine and set the resolution to lower numbers. Trouble is that the Display image of where the monitors “are” in relation to one another does not refresh in this version of Linux. Every time you Apply and Keep the configuration, you may as well close Display and open it up again. Also, changing the resolution may leave a few dark pixels between monitors in Display, but the VDI doesn’t like any of that. You want the monitors right next to each other so the mouse has no dead space to hop over. When done you can “Apply system-wide” with the user/pw that you log into the Linux box with. Go to top
Snap Apps to Half or Quarter Screen
Select an application with the mouse. Then hold the Windows button down while repeatedly pressing arrows buttons, Left, Right, Up or Down. The App will move from one place on the screen to another, often 6 positions per screen. Works in Linux, Windows 7 or Windows 10. Go to top
